Archit Ojha's review of The Selfish Giant

Deserted Garden

Children did not enter the garden thereafter. The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road which was very dusty and full of hard stones. As children were not playing in the garden so trees, grasses, flowers and birds became sad. Spring also did not enter to the garden. As a result, there was still a winter.

Worried Giant

Now the giant became restless. He did not understand the cause of such a long winter. Everyday he would see his cold and white garden and hope that there would be a change in the weather. But the Spring and Summer never came. There were only North Wind, Hail, Frost and the Snow dancing about through the trees.

Arrival of Spring

One morning the Giant heard some lovely music outside his window . He became happy as he thought that the Spring had come at last. He saw a most wonderful sight through a little hole in the wall.  He saw that the children were playing in the garden and trees were welcoming them by lowering their branches. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene. Only in one corner it was a still winter. The giant secretly went near him and helped him to climb.  When the children saw him helping the small boy , they also became happy. Giant then took a great axe and knocked down the wall.

Lockdown can become 'a golden opportunity' for education

Lockdown can become 'a golden opportunity' for Education

School lockdown - Waterford, Connecticut... - Waterford Police ...

This article is about what should be done by children, teachers and parents during the lockdown to be productive. There are many issues which are needed to get resolved and it can only be done by collective efforts. Before the lockdown ,the children used to go to school. Then rest of their time would be spend on doing homework and playing with friends .But now things are changed for them a lot, as their daily routine is totally changed. To cope up in this pandemic , children should be emotionally strong. They should choose things according to their goal. Means they should give priority to their studies and then if they are interested in learning a language, dancing or singing , they should practice. Afterwards they can choose anything from their hobbies like watching movies, listening songs or playing any video games, yoga, other physical activities and drama. So here children can see that the planning can be made in three stages . In the first stage they learn things. In the second stage they practice things and in the third stage they have stay can enjoy their hobbies.
Also children can make the bed, dust a shelf, set the table, fold and put away clothes, and tend to plants. Not all of them of course, but the children could choose what they would like to do and we need to help, remind them to do it joyfully.
Another thing the teachers can do to have an individual conference with each child. They can set up an appointment with each child online and can chat about what is going on with their lives, asked them if they are comfortable with the activities suggested,if they have any questions etc. These meetings can be different from child to child.

Parents should talk with their children frequently about their interests and problems to keep them more positive and friendly.Ministry of Education has also started a Manodarpan Portal which provides a psychological support  for mental health and well being of children during covid -19 outbreak. The king and the queen were surprised and delighted to see the bird.

They had put their pocket-money together to buy her the parrot. Hearing it, September thanked them. She said that she had a pet bird. It sang the most charming songs to her.

When the other Princesses came to know of it they started making fun of her saying the bird would never return. But the bird returned. It sang her the beautiful songs. The princess kept her window open day and night. The bird could come and go any time it liked. The other princess planned to advice September that she should caged her bird.

Bird in the Cage

But it couldn’t come out. Other princesses came. They told princess September that the bird would soon get used to the cage. But the bird asked to open the cage.

The Bird stopped singing
The princess asked the bird to sing. But the bird said that it could not sing. It wanted to see the trees, the lake and the green rice growing fields. The bird did not sing. It also did not eat the food. The other princesses told September to be firm with the bird.

Chapter 5.pmd

September set the bird free

The next day, Princess September went to the cage. She cried to see the bird as it looked dead. But it was not dead. The Princess started weeping. The bird said that it could not sing unless it was free. And if it could not sing, it would die. The Princess set the bird free. She promised it that she would not put it in a cage again.

Bird's Promise

She freed him then and there. He promised her that he would return to her. She sobbed and was feeling lonely. Her sisters mocked at her. But he returned to her and sang beautiful songs for her.

Chapter 5.pmd

She kept her windows open to let him go or come whenever he felt like. She grew beautiful and got married to the king of Cambodia and was carried on a white elephant. Her sisters were married to the councilor only as they were not as beautiful.

Master Call

 It is the most important signal which an elephant must know. It helps in saving the master’s life.
